OSAKA, JAPAN – Scientific and technological innovation continues to unlock new opportunities in the fields of healthcare, energy, and environmental sustainability. One area contributing to these advancements is nanotechnology, which enables materials at an extremely small scale to exhibit unique properties and functions tailored to various needs. This topic was addressed by Dr. Prashant Kumar, a research scientist from India, who served as a speaker at the Japan Youth Summit (JYS) 2026 Autumn Edition held at the Osaka International Convention Center (Grand Cube Osaka), Japan.
Dr. Prashant Kumar is a Research Scientist at the RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences, located in Yokohama, Japan. He possesses expertise in the development of magnetic nanomaterials, nanocomposites, ferrofluids, and superconducting magnet systems. His research bridges material development with a wide range of potential applications, spanning from medical imaging to energy technology and environmental management.
Cross-Country Research Journey
Dr. Prashant Kumar’s research career spans three countries: India, Australia, and Japan. He completed a joint doctoral program (Joint Cotutelle Ph.D.) in Applied Physics through the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) in India and RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. He subsequently continued his research at RIKEN in Yokohama, Japan.
With over eight years of research experience, Dr. Kumar has developed expertise in various fields, including nanotechnology, condensed matter physics, magnetic materials, thin films, and multifunctional nanostructures.
His contributions to scientific research are reflected in more than 33 peer-reviewed publications and 10 book chapters. He has also received several honors, including the Prof. Baldev Raj Memorial Award for Best Thesis and the CSIR International Travel Grant, as well as awards for oral and poster presentations at various scientific conferences.
Nanomaterials: Small Size, Big Impact
The Japan Youth Summit (JYS) 2026 provided a platform for Dr. Kumar to explore the vast potential of nanotechnology through his presentation titled “Nanomaterials: Small Size Creates a Big Impact.” During his presentation, he discussed the development, scientific principles, material characteristics, and future of nanotechnology, from the atomic scale to applications that support a more sustainable world.
One of the key topics he addressed was how changes in a material’s size can affect its color, chemical behavior, and functionality. For example, bulk gold is generally yellow. However, when made into nanoparticles, gold can appear ruby red when dispersed in water. At the nanoscale, materials can also exhibit properties that differ from those of the same materials in larger forms.
Through this example, Dr. Kumar explained that size is more than just a matter of dimensions. At the nanoscale, changes in size can give rise to new characteristics that can be harnessed to develop technologies with specific functions.
His presentation also introduced various nanomaterials, including nanoparticles, nanocomposites, graphene, and carbon nanotubes. These materials have potential applications across a range of fields, including electronics, energy storage, medical diagnostics, water treatment, and environmental technology.
The Potential of Nanotechnology for Health and the Environment
Beyond discussing the fundamental principles of nanotechnology, Dr. Kumar also conducts research focused on the practical applications of advanced materials. One of his key research areas is the development of high-temperature superconducting magnet systems to support next-generation nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technologies.
NMR and MRI are technologies that use magnetic systems for scientific research and medical imaging. The development of more advanced materials and magnetic systems is one way to support progress in these technologies.
Dr. Kumar’s other research interests include spintronics, energy conversion, magnetic hyperthermia, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, photocatalysis, and environmental remediation. He also researches magnetic materials and ferrofluids, which have potential applications in various technological fields.
In his presentation, nanotechnology was also linked to opportunities for developing solutions in clean water, energy, healthcare, and environmental management. Nevertheless, the development of nanomaterials must also consider safety, environmental impact, durability, and the feasibility of large-scale implementation.
Inspiring the Next Generation to Explore Scientific Innovation
Dr. Prashant Kumar’s participation in Japan Youth Summit (JYS) 2026 introduced young people to advances in nanotechnology and their relevance to addressing global challenges. The insights he shared demonstrated that scientific research extends beyond theoretical understanding and can pave the way for technological developments that address societal needs.
His academic journey across India, Australia, and Japan highlights the important role of international collaboration in advancing scientific knowledge. The exchange of perspectives, experiences, and expertise is essential to fostering innovation that brings together multiple disciplines.
Through JYS 2026, discussions on nanotechnology gave participants an opportunity to understand how scientific advancements can be connected to real-world needs. This reflects the spirit of innovation that encourages young people to think critically, explore new knowledge, and develop ideas for a more sustainable future.
