Don’t Get It Wrong! Key Differences Between Scholarship, Fellowship, Grant, and Student Loan Explained

YBB – Planning to continue your studies but feeling stuck because of the cost? Don’t worry, there are more options than you think.

Today, students have access to various types of financial support to help fund their education, especially when studying abroad. It’s not just about scholarships, there are also fellowships, grants, and student loans.

Since each option works differently, understanding them is important before you decide which one to pursue. Let’s take a closer look at the differences.

Scholarship

Scholarships are the most popular type of study funding. A scholarship is financial support provided by governments or organizations to students who meet certain criteria. Most scholarships are merit-based, meaning you need strong academic results or achievements in areas like academics, sports, or social activities. Some are also aimed at students from specific backgrounds or regions.

Scholarships do not need to be repaid. They can be full (covering all costs, sometimes including living expenses) or partial (covering only part of the tuition). Recipients are usually required to maintain their performance during their studies.

Grant

A grant is similar to a scholarship because it also does not need to be repaid.

The difference is that grants are often given with a specific purpose or expectation. In some cases, you may need to commit to certain activities, such as internships, projects, or services related to the funding provider.

Grants are usually awarded based on financial need or specific goals.

Fellowship

Fellowship as a form of educational support has several differences compared to scholarships and grants. First, a fellowship is considered a prestigious status that does not always provide direct financial support to its recipients. The benefits may come in the form of special facilities (especially when awarded by a university) or other academic advantages.

Second, fellowships are typically awarded to individuals who already have experience in their field and are intended to support specific research or academic projects. Therefore, fellowship status is generally only found among those who are pursuing or have completed postgraduate studies.

Student Loan

A student loan is funding that must be repaid after you graduate, usually with interest. It is commonly provided by governments or financial institutions and is easier to access compared to scholarships or grants.

This scheme is commonly available in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and several European countries. Governments or financial institutions typically offer these loans with relatively lower interest rates for students.

However, it comes with long-term responsibility, so it’s important to consider it carefully and use it as a last option.
