Every year on April 22, the world comes together to celebrate Earth Day and raise awareness about protecting the environment. In 2025, Earth Day marks its 55th anniversary with the global theme “Our Power, Our Planet.” This theme calls everyone to unite for renewable energy and accelerate the global shift away from fossil fuels.
This year, Earth Day organizers are pushing for a major goal. They want to triple the production of clean energy worldwide by 2030. Therefore, people, governments, and organizations are encouraged to take concrete actions starting now.
In Indonesia, Earth Day 2025 has sparked many inspiring initiatives. For example, people across the country participated in Earth Hour by switching off lights for one hour on April 22. This simple yet powerful act aimed to reduce energy consumption and raise awareness about climate change.
Additionally, several businesses also showed strong commitment to the cause. In Bali, hotels like Conrad Bali took part by turning off lights and promoting sustainable practices. They reduced single-use plastics and improved waste management efforts, making a real difference in environmental conservation.
Indonesian artists have also joined the movement. Rara Sekar, a well-known musician and environmental advocate, continues to inspire people to adopt a simpler, eco-friendly lifestyle. Through her music and public activities, she reminds audiences about the urgent climate crisis and the need to reconnect with nature.
However, despite the growing awareness, Indonesia still faces major environmental challenges. Large-scale deforestation projects threaten precious forests and indigenous communities. Environmental organizations have warned that irreversible ecosystem damage could occur if these projects continue unchecked.
Thus, Earth Day 2025 serves as a strong reminder. It calls everyone to balance development with sustainability and protect natural resources for future generations.
Meanwhile, in Jakarta, the city government took additional action. On Saturday, April 26, 2025, the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta organized “One Hour for Earth.” This initiative involved turning off lights and electricity in major streets and public buildings across the capital.
Asep Kuswanto, Head of the Jakarta Environmental Office, explained the goals. He stated that the initiative aimed to cut greenhouse gas emissions, save electricity, and promote economic efficiency. Moreover, he invited all citizens to join by turning off their home lights for one hour.
“This light-off moment is a reflection,” Asep said. “It increases environmental awareness amid the rapid development of our city,” he added.
The areas included in the Jakarta Earth Hour event were:
- Jalan Sudirman (from Dukuh Atas to Sampoerna Strategic building)
- Jalan MH Thamrin (Jakarta Pusat)
- Several other main roads and business districts
Government offices, malls, restaurants, hotels, and apartments also participated. They switched off their lights to show solidarity and promote environmental consciousness.
In conclusion, Earth Day 2025 in Indonesia shows growing support for renewable energy and sustainability. Although challenges remain, collective action can create a greener, healthier future. Therefore, everyone must realize that protecting the planet starts with simple, everyday choices.
