The Fulbright US–ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program provides a unique opportunity for scholars and professionals from ASEAN member states. Set for 2026, this program invites university faculty, government officials, and experts from NGOs or the private sector to conduct research in the United States.
Program Benefits and Objectives
The Fulbright program offers a range of benefits for selected scholars, including:
- A monthly stipend ranging from $2,710 to $3,145, depending on the US city.
- Round-trip economy-class airfare.
- A $1,250 allowance for settling in.
- Up to $3,000 for university lab and research fees.
While the grant supports various professional needs, it does not offer dependent support. At the program’s conclusion, Fulbright US–ASEAN scholars will meet in Washington, DC, for a final gathering.
Eligibility Criteria
To apply, candidates must meet specific eligibility criteria. Indonesian applicants, for example, must be Indonesian citizens who reside in Indonesia throughout the nomination and selection process. They must also commit to returning to Indonesia once they complete their program. Additional requirements include:
- Proficiency in English.
- Good health, verified through a medical examination.
- Significant scholarly or professional accomplishments.
Applicants will be ineligible if they are close family members of AMINEF, US Embassy, or US Department of State employees. Those who are already in the US under certain Fulbright grants or who have received a Fulbright award or held J-1 Exchange Visitor status in the past two years cannot apply.
Areas of Research Focus
Applicants should aim to focus on topics that align with ASEAN’s priorities. Some of the key research areas include economic integration, artificial intelligence (AI) policy, maritime cooperation, food safety, and public health. Projects that address regional challenges and support ASEAN-wide initiatives are highly preferred. Scholars are encouraged to explore interdisciplinary topics that will strengthen ASEAN and enhance its relationship with the US.
Application Process
Scholars must submit their applications through the AMINEF online portal. The required documents include:
- A project statement (three to five pages).
- A curriculum vitae (up to six pages).
- Three letters of recommendation.
- Copies of academic transcripts and diplomas.
- A valid identity document (KTP or passport).
While it’s not required, applicants should try to secure a letter of invitation from a US host institution, such as a university or research institute. Although optional, a letter of invitation greatly supports the applicant’s final selection.
Selection and Timing
A binational panel will review all applications to ensure a fair, merit-based process. Shortlisted candidates will then be interviewed by US Mission to ASEAN staff in Jakarta, with input from Indonesian scholars. The final selection will be made by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board in Washington.
Selected scholars will start their research between January and March 2026. The program will conclude by May 31, 2026, although the timeline may shift depending on travel restrictions or other factors.
Deadline and Submission
The deadline for submitting applications is December 2, 2024. It is highly recommended to submit applications early to avoid last-minute issues. By completing the application well before the deadline, applicants can ensure a smoother process. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews.
