OSAKA, JEPANG —Indonesian scientist and professor Prof. Sastia Prama Putri, Ph.D., brought a scientific perspective on food innovation and sustainability to the Japan Youth Summit (JYS) 2026 Autumn Edition, held in Osaka, Japan, on October 19–22, 2026. Through her presentation, she encouraged young people to see how scientific research can address real-world challenges and create meaningful impact across industries and communities.
Prof. Sastia is a Professor at the Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Osaka, Japan. Her work spans biotechnology, biochemistry, and metabolomics, with a focus on translating scientific discoveries into practical applications. She also founded Wellness by Bright Squad, reflecting her commitment to connecting scientific knowledge with everyday well-being.
Connecting Scientific Research with Real-World Challenges
During her session, Prof. Sastia introduced the Global Food and Agritech Laboratory and shared insights into research careers, metabolomics, and functional food technology. She emphasized the importance of conducting research that responds to real needs, while building international partnerships that help bridge the gap between scientific discoveries and industrial applications.
She also highlighted collaborative, multi-stakeholder efforts to bring Indonesian agricultural products—including coffee, cacao, tempeh, and fruits—to international markets. These efforts demonstrate how science, industry, and cross-border cooperation can work together to strengthen the value of local resources.
Another key topic was the upcycling of local bio-resources into functional foods. By finding new uses for biological materials that might otherwise go to waste, researchers can support more sustainable food systems while creating additional value from existing resources.
Inspiring Young People Through Science and Collaboration
Prof. Sastia’s presentation offered participants a broader understanding of how scientific innovation can contribute to economic development and sustainability. Her insights also underscored the value of interdisciplinary research and international collaboration in addressing complex global challenges.
For young people exploring careers in science, technology, and innovation, her experience demonstrated that research can extend beyond laboratories. With the right partnerships and a clear understanding of real-world needs, scientific knowledge can become a foundation for practical solutions.
