Why Students Should Join International Competitions Through NGOs

In today’s global landscape, international relations have evolved significantly. One of the most notable changes is the rise of diverse actors on the international stage. In the past, states dominated global affairs. However, now non-state actors, especially NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations), play an increasingly important role.

Since the 1960s, the number of NGOs has grown rapidly, especially in developing countries. These organizations serve as social agents that contribute to economic development, democratization, governance, and civil society empowerment. NGOs operate independently from government control, relying on volunteers, donations, and private sector support to implement their programs.

NGOs and Global Education Challenges

A nation’s progress depends heavily on the quality of its human and natural resources. Strong human capital can lead to sustainable national development. In turn, it can contribute to broader international progress. One key driver of human capital development is education.

Education allows individuals to improve their social and economic status. It is also a powerful tool to break the cycle of poverty. Unfortunately, Indonesia still faces significant challenges in this area. According to DW.com, Indonesia ranks 72nd out of 77 countries in the PISA education index. It lags behind neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Brunei. The country also struggles with low literacy levels and weak reading interest.

Several factors contribute to this issue. These include the quality of educators, the national education system, and limited access for underprivileged communities. However, quality education does not only come from formal schooling. Students can improve creativity and critical thinking by engaging in diverse learning activities, including competitions.

The Role of NGOs in Education and Global Engagement

NGOs offer innovative platforms for education, especially in remote and marginalized communities. They advocate for equal opportunities and provide alternative learning environments. Moreover, NGOs often support international programs, such as youth conferences and global competitions.

By joining competitions through NGOs, students can access broader opportunities beyond their national borders. These programs empower youth to develop leadership, diplomacy, and communication skills in an international setting.

“Conference experiences are meaningful. They differ from regular competitions or seminars. Speaking at an international conference is a whole different experience”

Why Students Should Participate Through NGOs:

  • NGOs offer structured guidance and mentoring before international events.
  • They connect students with global youth networks.
  • NGOs promote personal development through hands-on social impact.
  • They often collaborate with trusted international partners, including the United Nations and educational institutions.
  • NGOs support equal representation by helping fund travel and participation costs.

International competitions help students grow academically and personally. When these opportunities come through NGOs, the benefits are even greater. NGOs not only support education but also promote meaningful global engagement. For students seeking impact and inspiration, joining international competitions through NGOs is a powerful step forward.
