Viki Permata Joe, a proud recipient of the Beasiswa Indonesia Maju scholarship, has proven that courage and consistency can overcome any setback. Her journey from a high school graduate in Gresik to a university student in the Netherlands is nothing short of inspiring. Currently studying at Wageningen University, Viki shares her transformation through failures, wins, and life lessons abroad.
At first, Viki did not succeed in her exchange program attempt. However, she used that failure as motivation. She stayed up late to prepare for her SAT and IELTS exams. With unwavering determination, she eventually secured her spot at one of the best universities in the Netherlands.
“A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.”
– John A. Shedd
This quote perfectly sums up Viki’s journey. She left her comfort zone and sailed toward her dreams.
Achievements Before University Life Abroad
Before moving to the Netherlands, Viki already carved a name for herself. She joined KSBA Square, an online academic competition organized by Diponegoro University. This event aimed to encourage students to keep learning and striving during the pandemic.
- Over 100 students joined the competition.
- Viki won 3rd place out of all participants.
- She received two medals from different events.
Viki credited her success to her supportive school, MAN 2 Gresik, and the dedication of her teachers. Their encouragement allowed her to participate in multiple competitions that built her confidence and academic skills.
Overcoming Fears in a Foreign Country

Adjusting to life in the Netherlands was not easy for Viki. Everything felt foreign—from the weather to the language and even the daily routines. She shared her first experience trying to find a room for her BSN appointment on campus. Despite the clear signs, she struggled to locate the room and ended up wandering around.
In Indonesia, she couldn’t even go to the market alone. But in the Netherlands, she had no choice but to become independent. These small victories helped her grow.
“Stepping out of your comfort zone is worth it,” she said.
“You’ll find so many new things that are too good to miss.”
A New Way of Learning and Living
At Wageningen University, students enjoy flexible schedules. However, that freedom comes with big responsibility. There are lectures, tutorials, practical sessions, and excursions. Only practical and excursion classes require attendance.
Viki admitted that she once skipped several classes and didn’t study on her own. As a result, she struggled to prepare for her final exam. That experience taught her to become more disciplined and manage her time wisely.
“You’re the only one responsible for your success,” she emphasized.
Lessons Beyond the Classroom
Living abroad gave Viki the chance to experience Dutch culture firsthand. She joined King’s Day celebrations, where people dressed in orange and filled the streets with music and dance. She also discovered the unique tradition of hanging a backpack on a flagpole to signal a student’s graduation.
These cultural experiences sparked her love for travel. Now, she dreams of exploring more European countries, meeting new people, tasting local food, and collecting stories to tell.
“The world is out there—not just in your books or maps,” she said.
“Every trip gives you a new way of seeing things.”
