OSAKA, JAPAN — Group 2 was awarded 2nd Place Winner Project (High School) at the Japan Youth Summit (JYS) 2026 Autumn Edition, organized by Youth Break the Boundaries (YBB) from October 19–22, 2026, at the Osaka International Convention Center (Grand Cube Osaka), Japan. The team, composed of participants from Malaysia, Canada, and Indonesia, collaborated to develop a solution for elderly individuals who face difficulties in using digital technology.
Members of Group 2 include:
- Tey Wen Wei from National Institute of Technology, Oshima College, Malaysia
- Sarah Fung from United World College, Canada
- Made Anindita from Public Senior High School 1 Gresik, Indonesia
TONARI: A Digital Solution to Support the Elderly
Through a project titled “TONARI,” Group 2 addressed the challenges faced by the elderly in Japan, a nation with a growing population of people aged 65 and older. Many seniors struggle with tasks such as understanding official correspondence, identifying fraudulent messages, navigating smartphone applications, or seeking assistance within their local communities.
These challenges are often compounded in rural areas, where access to technological support is limited. With TONARI, Group 2 proposes a solution designed to help the elderly better understand digital information and access support with greater ease.
The project envisions a society where the elderly do not feel isolated, left behind by technological advancements, or afraid to ask for help.

Targeted Impact and Project Development
Group 2 has established several indicators to measure the potential benefits of TONARI. These targets include:
- 80% task completion rate: measuring the success of users in completing specific tasks, such as reading official documents or identifying suspicious messages.
- Zero unresolved critical incidents: testing the accuracy of AI-generated explanations and fraud alerts.
- 10 successful connections: measuring the application’s utility in helping users connect with real-world support.
The project also outlines an estimated cost of US$2,250 and identifies potential collaboration opportunities with various partners to support its development.

Cross-Border Collaboration to Address Global Challenges
The achievements of Group 2 demonstrate how participants from different countries can work together to respond to social issues. Tey Wen Wei (Malaysia), Sarah Fung (Canada), and Made Anindita (Indonesia) focused on Japan’s aging population as the foundation for developing a solution tailored to the needs of the community.
Through TONARI, Group 2 highlights the importance of technological innovation that prioritizes not only digital advancement but also accessibility and human well-being.
Winning second place in the High School category at JYS 2026 serves as recognition for the concept they developed. The project also conveys the message that international collaboration can unlock new perspectives in creating solutions for the challenges faced by society.
Muhammad Aldi Subakti, Chairman of the Japan Youth Summit 2026 Autumn Edition, congratulated Group 2 on their achievement and expressed his hope that this recognition would serve as motivation to continue developing TONARI.
“I hope the idea developed by Group 2 does not end with this competition, but rather continues to evolve so that it can provide tangible benefits to society. Congratulations on your achievement, and may you continue to grow,” said Aldi.
