Unique Holiday Traditions Around the World That Will Surprise You

As the holiday season approaches, people around the world prepare to celebrate in their own unique ways. While some traditions are familiar, others are delightfully unusual. Here are some of the most fascinating and unexpected holiday customs from different cultures:

1. Japan – KFC for Christmas

In Japan, Christmas is not a national holiday, but it has become synonymous with feasting on Kentucky Fried Chicken. This tradition dates back to the 1970s when a marketing campaign by KFC convinced people that fried chicken was the perfect holiday meal. Now, families across Japan pre-order KFC Christmas buckets weeks in advance.

2. Spain – The Pooping Log (Tió de Nadal)

In Catalonia, Spain, children welcome the festive season with “Tió de Nadal,” a wooden log with a painted face. In the days leading up to Christmas, children “feed” the log treats. On Christmas Eve, they beat it with sticks while singing songs, encouraging it to “poop” out small presents and candies.

3. Mexico – Night of the Radishes (Noche de Rábanos)

Every December 23rd, the city of Oaxaca in Mexico hosts the Night of the Radishes, a festival where artisans carve elaborate sculptures from giant radishes. These detailed creations depict nativity scenes, historical events, and folklore, drawing thousands of spectators each year.

4. South Korea – Kimchi Making Season (Kimjang)

Kimjang is an annual tradition in South Korea where families and communities gather in late autumn or early winter to prepare and store kimchi for the colder months. This event, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, highlights the spirit of cooperation and ensures that households have a steady supply of this essential dish.

5. Sweden – The Gävle Goat (Gävlebocken)

Since 1966, the Swedish town of Gävle has celebrated the holiday season by erecting a massive straw goat, known as the Gävlebocken. However, this tradition is accompanied by an ongoing challenge—vandals often attempt to burn it down before Christmas, despite strict security measures. The survival of the goat each year has become an anticipated part of the holiday season.

These traditions remind us that holiday celebrations come in many forms, reflecting the diversity and creativity of different cultures. Whether it’s eating fast food for Christmas, carving radishes, or making kimchi, each tradition brings people together in the spirit of joy and togetherness.
