SMAN 1 Gresik Students Win Multiple Awards at Japan Youth Summit 2026

OSAKA, JAPAN — Indonesian students have once again achieved remarkable success on the international stage. Four students from SMAN 1 Gresik received several prestigious awards at the Japan Youth Summit (JYS) 2026 Autumn Edition, held from October 19–22, 2026, at the Osaka International Convention Center (Grand Cube Osaka), Japan.

Their achievements included three Best Costume awards for their presentation of traditional Indonesian attire and second place in the Best Idea Innovation – Junior category for TONARI, an inclusive technology concept designed to support older adults.

Showcasing Eastern Indonesian Culture on the Global Stage

Three students from SMAN 1 Gresik who were part of Group 4—Miracle Gathyo Merzalino, Muhammad Troya Faeyza Nakimera Tyo, and Ken Damar Maheswara—received the Best Costume award.

The three students stood out in outfits featuring red-and-black geometric patterns accented with gold, complemented by large feathered headdresses and decorative accessories inspired by Eastern Indonesian traditional attire. Their presentation not only captured the attention of the international audience but also demonstrated how cultural expression can serve as a form of diplomacy on the global stage.

Through their costumes, the students introduced elements of Indonesia’s cultural identity to an international gathering, highlighting the role of cultural diversity in fostering cross-cultural appreciation.

Developing TONARI: A Digital Solution for Older Adults

In addition to the Best Costume awards, another SMAN 1 Gresik student, Made Anindita TM, secured 2nd Place in the Best Idea Innovation – Junior category. Made was part of Group 2, an international team comprising Pranavkumar Suryakantbhai Pandya from India, Tey Wen Wei from Malaysia, and Sarah Fung from Canada.

The international team developed TONARI, a digital assistance platform designed to help older adults access public services, understand official documents, and navigate smartphone applications. The concept responds to the challenges older adults may face in an increasingly digital society, particularly when limited digital literacy makes it difficult to access essential information and services.

TONARI reflects an effort to make digital technology more accessible and inclusive for older adults. By focusing on practical challenges in everyday life, the team sought to develop a concept that addresses users’ needs and supports their ability to navigate digital services more independently.

The team’s achievement also highlights the value of international collaboration in developing innovative ideas. Despite coming from different backgrounds, the members worked together to identify a social challenge and formulate a solution centered on the needs of its intended users.

Indonesian Students Making Their Mark on the International Stage

The achievements of SMAN 1 Gresik students at Japan Youth Summit 2026 demonstrate the potential of Indonesian students to contribute on the global stage. Their recognition in both cultural presentation and technological innovation highlights the diverse ways young Indonesians can represent their national identity while engaging with international challenges.

Through Japan Youth Summit 2026, the students not only brought recognition to their school and country but also had opportunities to expand their international networks, exchange perspectives, and engage with young people from different cultural backgrounds.

Their accomplishments reflect the importance of providing young people with opportunities to showcase their creativity, develop innovative ideas, and participate in international collaboration.
