The Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellowship is an annual program initiated by the ISEAS. Yusof Ishak Institute to provide opportunities for postdoctoral researchers and mid-career policymakers to conduct research in international relations, public policy, and strategic issues affecting Southeast Asia. The program is named after Professor Wang Gungwu, a prominent figure in Asian studies and regional history.
Through this fellowship, participants can utilize the full range of research facilities provided by ISEAS. Including access to a specialized library, office space, and a broad professional network, including a possible opportunity to meet Professor Wang Gungwu in person during the fellowship period.
Research Focus and Priorities
The Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellowship 2026 prioritizes research addressing the following central issues:
- Relations between the United States and China: Analysis of the dynamics of rivalry and cooperation between these two major powers and their implications for Southeast Asia.
- Regional security issues: Including conflicts in the South China Sea, ASEAN’s role, and security challenges in the Asia-Pacific.
- Global/regional economic and trade initiatives: Studies on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and other economic initiatives.
- Influence of media and digital technology: How major powers use social media and digital technology to shape public opinion and policies in Southeast Asia.
Selected researchers are expected to produce academic and policy works that enrich understanding and provide strategic recommendations for policymakers in the region.

Eligibility and Application Requirements
The fellowship welcomes two categories of applicants:

- Mid-career Policymakers: Experienced professionals in government or policy sectors. Even without a Ph.D., but with relevant research interests and professional background.
Applicants must submit the following documents: A cover letter outlining their motivation and research relevance. A detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV) and a research statement (maximum 3 pages, double-spaced) describing the topic, methodology, timeline, and expected outcomes, two letters of recommendation from academics or professionals familiar with the applicant’s qualifications, and a proposal for partial or full cost-sharing during the fellowship.
